Sandy Relief

(The following was written by Brother Michael Perillo-Gentile '11, whose hometown in New Jersey was hit hard by Hurrican Sandy) Dear Brothers:

Hurricane Sandy has caused pain and devastation to families throughout the Northeast that cannot be conveyed through any words. As a native and current resident of the Jersey Shore, I have witnessed firsthand the great suffering that continues to be endured. A great deal of our brothers reside in the Tri-State area and were also affected by the storm. The rebuilding of all the destroyed homes and businesses will take years and requires monetary support.

As a brother of the greatest and most generous Fraternity in the world, I am writing you today to ask you to please contribute to the relief collection that the Pi Chapter of Zeta Psi has established for the hurricane victims. We need to help these people rebuild the lives that the storm stole from them. All of the proceeds go directly to the victims.

We have identified two legitimate charities that will accept tax-deductible donations. Please make checks payable to either "Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund" or "Hope for New York" with "Hurricane Sandy" specified in the memo. Mike Bruce '08 will be collecting all of the checks and mailing them into the proper authorities. You can mail your donations to him at 7 Madden Avenue, Milford, MA 01757, or contact him at mbruce@pizetes.org. Links to both charities can be found below. If you decide to donate online, please let Mike or I know so that we can recognize your donation once the campaign ends.

I want to thank you so much for any amount you can spare during these hard times. You have no idea how much the people affected by the storm will appreciate your support. Feel free to contact me with any questions or thoughts at perilm41@gmail.com. Thanks again and God bless.

In TKPhi, Michael "PG" Perillo-Gentile '11 perilm41@gmail.com

What's New at the House?

The Actives would like to share what they've been up to over the last couple of months. Over half the house and 10 pledges went to a Zeta PSI LTI (leadership training) meeting at WPI in October. We hosted the Nu Delta Chapter twice: once for a regular weekend and once for their initiation. Weekly Gamma reports have been very well organized and accurate, and the house manager is doing a great job keeping the house clean despite reduced numbers. A Spring Pledge has already been identified, and we hope to bid a few more to round out our roster for next Fall. Everyone is doing their share, and even more, to keep the house running.

Our work outside the house is also going well. Pledges and Actives both raked leaves at Prospect Park and the Susan Odell Taylor School. We attended Pi Beta Phi's charity wing fest and helped them set up their Christmas decorations. The Chapter placed 2nd in IFC Soccer.

There is a sense of camaraderie that each brother feels towards each other and the house, and the guys are all working hard to rebuild the Chapter.

Property Documents Scanned and Uploaded

We recently scanned and collated all of Jay Webb’s documents dating back to the 1980s. This is a similar effort to what we did with Jim Ljunglin’s files last year. They are posted online at brothers.pizetes.org. The Property folder was completely reorganized as part of this effort. Let us know if things are not intuitive or if you have any suggestions for improvement.

WPI LTI Recap

A bunch of Pi Zetes and pledges went to WPI this weekend to IHQ's Regional Leadership Training Institute. Here's a short recap from Daniel Bruce, one of the pledges: Over the weekend, a group of brothers and pledges from the Pi Chapter traveled to their Pi Tau counterparts' house at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. They attended one of many annual Leadership Training Institute programs put on by Zeta Psi IHQ. After meeting brothers from the Pi Tau, Nu Delta (Marist), and Rho Alpha (MIT) chapters, the entire group split into smaller sections to attend two of six workshops. Among topics learned were identifying and correcting fringe membership and creating and managing house budgets. One of the topics, risk management, was spoken about after informing the group that, out of all industries, fraternities were the fourth most costly to insure; so much so that Zeta Psi has partnered with over 30 other fraternities to create their own insurance group. Lastly, the brothers and pledges from the Pi Chapter would like to say "thank you" to the brothers at the Pi Tau chapter for hosting this LTI.

A Word from a Pledge

The first pledge meeting for the Fall 2012 pledge class occurred last night. Here's a note from Nathan McCarthy, one of our pledges: The pledge meeting really made me feel like a member of the house. After participating in the house meeting and being inducted as a pledge, I'm proud to wear the Zeta Psi pin. I'm looking forward to the pledging process and am excited to contribute to the house.

Congratulations to the Fall 2012 Pledge Class!

The following men have signed bids and make up the Fall 2012 Pledge Class:

Chase Almond of Kingston, RI Daniel Bruce of Milford, MA Craig Fitzgerald of Winchester, MA Tyler Gruttadauria of Stratford, CT Brian Hatcher of Danbury, CT Nathan McCarthy of Wynantskill, NY Sean Sanford of Pompano Beach, FL Michael Scocozza of Poughquag, NY Alec Vogel of Muscatine, IA Nash Widowski of Macedonia, OH

We are thrilled to have these eleven gentlemen in our newest Pledge class and we look forward to teaching them the rites and rituals of Zeta Psi!

Catching up with the Class of 2012

A large senior class is departing Troy soon. Each of these guys has positively contributed to the house in a different way. Here's what they'll be up to after graduation: Dodds Anderson will be working for Schlumberger in Houston, TX as an engineer specializing in dynamic pressure management for drilling and hydrofracking. Nolan Ceuch will be attending RPI in the fall as a graduate student. Andrew Snyder will be working at Chromalloy Gas Turbines in Orangeburg, NY as an engineer. He will be living with Miles Dunsmoor '08 in Garnerville, NY. Zachry Soens will be attending Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

Well... no one else could be reached for comment... but we wish them luck anyway!!!

Alumni Weekend was Awesome!

The 61st Annual Alumni Weekend was this past weekend and it was a lot of fun! Over 80 brothers and guests attended. The open bar at the bowling alley on Friday night was a real treat, as was the Elder vs. Active softball game on Saturday afternoon. The Elders defeated the Actives 12-5 behind a complete game pitching performance by Lauck Walton '84. The Phi Alpha scattered 7 hits over 9 innings and struck out 5 batters, including Jamie Zajac '13 twice. The Elder infield was particularly strong and more than made up for some of the holes in the outfield (Andrew Darst '11).

Ryan Vasko '12 performed valiantly for the losers, but was brought down by numerous errors from Arjun Chavern '15 and Joey Tripodo '14.

The Elders are now 2-0 in sporting events against the Actives. As you may recall, the Elders beat the Actives in soccer last year 4-3 in sudden death. Perhaps next year, the Actives will get in the winning column.

Pictures of the weekend will be posted soon, so stay tuned!
