RPI Basketball in League Playoffs

You may or may not be aware that the RPI men's basketball team finished the regular season tied for first place in the Liberty League.  They ended the season with an 11-3 record in the Liberty League, and 17-7 overall.  Due to a dubious tiebreaker, they will not host the tournament, and instead will travel to Hobart to face off against Skidmore on Friday evening at 6 PM.  The winner of the game will play the winner of Hobart vs. Hamilton in the final, which will take place Saturday at 3 PM.

Our chapter is represented by the following guys:

  • Paul Halas '06 (assistant coach)
  • Andrew Darst '11 (co-captain)
  • Mike Hammond '11
  • Matt Pooley '12
  • Daniel Martin '13
  • Jamie Zajac '13
  • Nate Haskell '14

Please join us in wishing the basketball team the best of luck this weekend!

A Note From the Actives

Dear Brothers, Hi, I'm Joe Novek of the Spring Class of 2009 and I'm writing this email to introduce myself as the Alumni Chair. This year we are all looking forward to the 60th Annual Alumni Weekend and it should be a great time to all those that attend. In Troy, we are all currently dealing with the snow that has been plaguing the Northeast. RPI even canceled classes on Wednesday in anticipation of the big snow storm coming from the Midwest. Luckily for us, our houseman Greg Mummah was able to find someone nearby with a Bobcat who cleared our parking lot for free.

In other news, we are soon initiating six new members to the fraternity, Nick Keefe, Joey Tripodo, Nate Haskell, Nate Fiala, Sean Dempsey, and Oskar Ramirez. They used the extra time over break to learn a lot more about the brothers and the house. Their quiz grades are doing much better than before break, and the credit should go to Pledge Master Justin Persin and Assistant Pledge Master Dan Barrett.

The basketball team is also having a good year with their current record at 10-7. Brothers that are on the team are Danny Martin, Andrew Darst, Mike Hammond, Jamie Zajac, pledge Nate Haskell, and "associate" brother Matt Pooley. Other brothers Mario Iacuone, Brenden Farley, and Redon Quello, along with pledges Nate Fiala, Sean Dempsey, and Nick Keefe played on the JV team this year. The next home basketball games are Friday the 11th against Skidmore and Saturday the 12th against UNION. If you are in town, come support the guys.

In our elections before break we elected Dodds Anderson as our new President, who was previously Vice President. Taking Dodds' place at Vice President is Greg Mummah. Secretary is now Brenden Farley. I was also elected to be Sigma Rho. House Manager, as discussed previously, is now Greg Mummah, and K-Man is still Mario Iacuone.

In closing, I look forward to working with many of you to help plan this upcoming Alumni Weekend which this year falls on the weekend of the 30th in April. I also hope to see many of you at the Alumni Weekend this year.

Pi Zetes Have Successful Weekend in Troy

The Board of Directors met in Troy this weekend for their winter meeting, as has been our custom since 2009.  The weekend was filled with good company, much progress towards "winning the future," and even Rick Case '70 getting elbow-deep in an overflowing mop closet! On Friday, a few Zetes attended the RPI Men's Basketball game against Union College in Schenectady, where they saw the Engineers defeated the hated Dutchmen 65-58.  Zetes on the team include Jamie Zajac '13, Mike Hammond '11, Andrew Darst '11, Dan Martin '13, and Nate Haskell '14.  Many snaps for them.

Saturday morning found a "tired" Joe Beck '11 and recently-arrived Jim Ljunglin '57 unexpectedly running into each other at Manory's, which has reportedly jacked their prices up in wake of the RPI Men's Hockey team's recent success.  The Board of Directors then convened at the Student Union at 2:00 PM for a long, yet very productive meeting.  Directors in attendance included Ivor Preiss '55, Jim Ljunglin '57, Rick Case '70, Rick Kasold '70, Tony Bourassa '71, John Spohn '81, and Michael Bruce '08.  Meeting minutes will be posted soon.  After that, Jim, John, and Mike enjoyed a dinner together at Verdile's, while Tony and Rick Case attended RPI Hockey's defeat of #1 Yale at the Houston Field House.

Jim, John, Mike, and Rick Case met with the actives at 11:00 AM on Sunday morning to discuss the future of the chapter.  It was touch-and-go for a while, but eventually there were smiles all around, and the chapter sang Kumbaya together at the meeting's conclusion at 11:45.  The elders then departed, ending a very enjoyable Trojan weekend.

We look forward to working with the actives throughout the course of the semester, and seeing everyone back together at Alumni Weekend in April!
